Ok, there are many racing games out there and if racing was what this game was about I would put this message under Sports. Don't get me wrong, if you are a NASCAR nut (yes Buddah143 I'm talking to you) then you will be very satisfied with this game as well but it offers so much more.
Have you ever had a bad day and then had to deal with bad drivers on 490 or 590? You know the idoits who cut you off or merge across three lanes without signalling, or start moving into your lane with you in it? Have you aver felt like using your car as the weapon you know it could be? How about ramming those idiots right off the road and leaving them a burning hunk of crap! You can't really live out that kind of thing in real life but that is what the Burnout series is all about.
I have only played the demo included in a recent OXM magazine demo disc so you will want to read the article in today's D&C on page 2C to get Game Dork Doug Elfman's take but take it from me this game is very cool.
First of all you get a small collection of cars to which you can add more as your skills increase. The basic gist of the game is that you drive like hell through one of several cities (which by the way have several very cool alternate routes if you can get to them) and you try to wreck havock with the other racers as well as traffic. This means you can smash, bash and crash to your heart's delight. Unlike the previous versions of this game which included a very limited crash-breaker feature, this game allows you to enact the ultimate revenge feature at almost any point in the game. Play your cards right and bring down whole buildings onto on-coming traffic and then watch the whole glorious chain of events in something which boils down to "bullet-time". There is just something sickeningly satisfying about watching all this mayhem!
Oh and then about 2 seconds later your car resets and you are flying along again without so much as a scratch. You might find though if you were effectivie enough at taking your opponents down that your boost meter is charged up to full.
Will I be buying the full version of this game? Well first I want to finish last year's Burnout 3: Takedown which I only purchased a week ago (which is worth buying as well even if you get Revenge) and then I am going to get Revenge for my 360. Yes it is out now for XBOX but in November you will be able to get the game for the 360 in all the 360's enhanced goodness!
