If you haven't seen it already, I recommend picking up this week's issue of Time magazine. Bill Gates is on the cover so you can't miss it. Naturally, they are talking about the coming release of the 360, but also about the gamer wars heating up again with the new PS3 and Nintendo systems on the way. Some nice observations about the new "age" we are living in; if the 90's were the "dot.com" era, we are now in the "dot.home" era; what with all the emphasis on digital media in the home: games, movies, TV, communications, etc. With all that the new 360 can do, it is poised to become the new focal point of the home entertainment system.
Some nice trivia about the Xbox, too. For instance, did you know that Mircosoft sells the Xbox at a loss? They've sold 20 million units and haven't made a dime from them; they make their profit from their share of the game revenues.
They also talk about the new design. It was chosen to be more in-home friendly; that is, they wanted something to appeal to more than just hard-core gamers. The current XBox also did not sell very in Japan. The Japanese are very space-conscious and the current box has a large, heavy footprint. So, the new machine is smaller, sleeker, pleasing to the eye, and more easily fits in to the home entertainment system.
There was some good information about the upcoming new games for the 360, too. The attention to detail is bordering on the scary; like individual shadows on the leaves of the trees, or blades of grass all moving independently of each other as they wave in the breeze. Pretty cool. Still photos in the article include Call of Duty 2 and one from DOOM 4, yes, I said DOOM 4.
Oh, and they mention "the next version of Halo". It is not being released with the 360. According to Gates, its release is scheduled for spring '06, the same day that Sony releases the PS3. THAT should be interesting.
Anyway, I recommend checking it out. There is some very good info in there on the future of digital media, including games.
See ya on line!
